Craig Bullivant, principal

I am a Chartered Accountant, member of the Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand institute, and hold a Certificate of Public Practice.

I specialise in providing tax advisory, IRD disputes, and managing relationships with Inland Revenue. I am also adept at financial accounting and annual compliance.

After majoring in accounting at University of Canterbury in 2006 joined the investigations team at Inland Revenue. I considered that to consult in public practice it would be useful to understand the methods and processes of Inland Revenue. I dealt with many cases; mostly taxpayers got their tax wrong through lack of good professional advice. I was closely involved with the disputes process, writing notices of proposed adjustments (NOPA’s) and statements of position (SOP’s) and served on the national shortfall penalty committee. My clients now get the benefit of my guidance through IRD processes and their likely actions.

I moved from being the gatekeeper in 2013 and joined a mid-tier chartered accounting practice where I undertook tax advisory on many issues including property transactions, understanding associated persons, foreign investment funds, repatriating pensions, residency rules, and maximising fringe benefits. And managing Inland Revenue disputes and debt cases, this time from the other side.

I commenced as a sole practitioner in February 2017, providing taxation advisory services for businesses, individuals and other accounting practices, and financial accounting. I am Christchurch based though my clients come from many New Zealand locations.

My letters of taxation advice are well researched using current legislation, case law and commentary, with clear and concise outcomes and conclusions. I have challenged IRD through the disputes process with beneficial outcomes, often saving clients considerable stress and money. I also prepare financial accounts and compliance for a range of small to medium businesses, trusts and individuals. I use CCH iFirm accounting software, and have IRD agency status with direct online filing.

Prior to taking up accounting I held key account management roles with Caltex Oil and Tranz Rail (latterly Toll Rail). These roles refined my knowledge of commerce and industry, and developed my skill of communicating with people at all levels.

The combination of my skills and experience equip me to be an effective specialist and proficient communicator.
